Scout's Storybook ("Scout's Storybook," "the app," "we," "us," or "our") is a family storytelling app published by Scout with Heart. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. Scout's Storybook is designed for families and children, and is intended to be set up and managed by a parent or guardian. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

1. A note about children (heading)

Scout's Storybook is made for kids, but accounts are created and managed by an adult (a parent or guardian). We do not knowingly allow a child to create an independent account without a parent or guardian's involvement. We take children's privacy seriously and aim to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar laws. A parent or guardian can review, edit, or request deletion of their child's information at any time by contacting us (see "Contact us" below).

2. Information we collect (heading)

• Account information (adults): name and email address used to create and secure your account.
• Family and child profiles: information you choose to add, such as a child's first name, age or birthday, and avatar.
• Content you create: stories, drawings, characters, voice recordings or narration (if you choose to record), and messages shared within your family.
• Subscription information: if you subscribe, your purchase is processed by Apple or Google. We receive confirmation of your subscription status but do not collect or store your full payment card details.
• Limited technical/usage information: basic information needed to operate the app reliably (for example, app version and error logs).

We do not sell your or your child's personal information.

3. How we use information (heading)

We use the information to: create and secure accounts and family connections; generate stories and illustrations using artificial intelligence; save your family's stories, drawings, and characters; let family members you connect share stories with one another; provide, maintain, and improve the app and keep it safe; and process subscriptions and provide customer support.

4. Artificial intelligence (AI) processing (heading)

Scout's Storybook uses AI to help create stories and illustrations. To do this, the text and prompts you enter (and, where applicable, a description of a drawing) are sent to trusted third-party AI service providers to generate the content. We instruct these providers to process this content only to provide the service. AI-generated stories and pictures are created automatically and should always be reviewed by an adult before sharing (see our Terms of Use).

5. Content safety (heading)

Keeping children safe is central to Scout's Storybook. We use automated filters to detect and block clearly inappropriate or unsafe content. The app additionally flags potentially concerning content for the adult to review — including content that may relate to self-harm or suicide, injury or violence, sexual content, bullying, abuse, or similar serious topics. These flags are tools to support a parent or guardian; they are not a substitute for adult supervision and are not a crisis or emergency service. If you or someone you know is in danger, contact your local emergency services. It remains the adult's responsibility to monitor the stories and content created in the app and to ensure they are appropriate for their child. Adults who misuse the app — including by entering inappropriate, abusive, or sexual content, or any content that sexualizes or endangers a child — may be banned from the app, and unlawful content (including any content involving the sexual exploitation of a minor) may be reported to the appropriate authorities as required or permitted by law.

6. How information is shared (heading)

We share information only as needed to run the app: with family members you connect (stories and content you choose to share are visible to them); with service providers that help us operate the app (such as our backend/hosting provider, our subscription provider, and our AI providers), who may only use the information to provide their services to us; with app stores (Apple and Google) for subscriptions and app delivery; and for legal and safety reasons, when required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or property of a child, you, us, or others — including reporting unlawful content to the proper authorities. We do not sell personal information or share it for third-party advertising.

7. Data security (heading)

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption of data in transit. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we work to protect your family's information.

8. Data retention and deletion (heading)

We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the app. A parent or guardian may request to review or delete their family's or child's information at any time by contacting us, and we will respond within a reasonable time and as required by law.

9. Your choices and rights (heading)

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information, or to object to certain processing. Parents and guardians can manage child profiles and content in the app, and can contact us to exercise these rights.

10. Changes to this policy (heading)

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
